Adtec's Encoder Does Triple Duty

April 22, 2009

Calling the company's multi-codec mediaHUB-HD 422 encoder "the Swiss Army knife of encoding," Adtec president Kevin Ancelin used a Tuesday press conference to showcase the three applications – contribution, distribution and studio encoding – enabled by the versatile new entry.

Complementing Adtec's flexible family of encoders, decoders and multiplexers, the mediaHUB-HD 422 handles a wide variety of high-quality encoding chores, including HD or SD streams of either MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC content in both 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 color spaces. Support for 40 encoding profiles ensures compatibility across ATSC, DVB, MPEG and IPTV platforms.

The 1 RU device is equally at home in studio or mobile applications and is controllable both from its LCD front panel as well as an internal Web-based control application. And for VOD and DPI applications, the mediaHUB-HD 422 has the capability to create high- and standard-definition CableLabs-compliant MPEG-2 transport streams.

Additional features set the mediaHUB-HD 422 apart from single-function encoding devices. A 9-pin RS-422 interface allows the unit to control a tape device and to be controlled by, for example, a nonlinear edit system, allowing edited timelines to be passed directly to the encoder. The mediaHUB-HD 422 also includes an internal server capable of storing media following encoding for later playout or distribution.
